March Learning & Development at Fun Start Childcare

Spring is in the air at Fun Start Childcare, and with the new season comes exciting opportunities for growth, discovery and learning. This month, our focus is on building pre-writing skills to help support our children in becoming confident, capable and school ready.

Developing Pre-Writing Skills ✏️

Throughout March, we will be strengthening the foundations needed for early writing. Our activities will focus on:

  • Fine motor development through threading, cutting, playdough and tweezers
  • Mark-making using a variety of tools such as chunky pencils, chalks, paintbrushes and crayons
  • Building hand strength and coordination
  • Practising early letter shapes, lines and patterns

These skills are essential in helping children gain the control and confidence they need before forming letters and beginning to write independently. By making learning hands-on and fun, we ensure children remain engaged while developing these important abilities.

Song of the Month: Incy Wincy Spider 🕷️

Our song of the month is the much-loved nursery rhyme Incy Wincy Spider, linking beautifully to our spring theme of growth and new beginnings.

Singing and acting out this song supports:

  • Language and communication skills
  • Rhythm and listening skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Understanding of weather and seasonal change

The spider climbing up the spout is also a lovely way to explore perseverance and resilience — important life skills we encourage every day.

Focus Book: The Three Little Pigs 🐷

A firm favourite among our children, The Three Little Pigs continues to capture imaginations. The children enjoy re-enacting the story with their peers, taking turns to play the pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.

Through role play, they develop:

  • Confidence and expressive language
  • Understanding of story structure
  • Cooperation and teamwork
  • Problem-solving skills

We have extended this learning by exploring the story from the Big Bad Wolf’s perspective, encouraging children to think critically and consider different viewpoints.

Focus Book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛

Our second focus story, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, links perfectly with our spring theme of growth, change and healthy routines.

Children will explore:

  • Life cycles and changes in nature
  • Days of the week
  • Counting and sequencing
  • The importance of balanced, healthy eating

Just like the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly, we celebrate the wonderful growth we see in our children every day.

Supporting Learning at Home 🏡

We love working in partnership with parents, and there are many simple ways you can support your child’s learning at home:

✏️ Encourage Pre-Writing Skills

  • Provide crayons, chalk or paintbrushes with water outdoors for mark-making.
  • Practise drawing lines, zig-zags and circles.
  • Strengthen little hands with playdough, Lego, threading pasta or using child-safe scissors.
  • Encourage your child to draw pictures and talk about what they have created.

📚 Share Stories Together

  • Re-read The Three Little Pigs and ask, “What would you build your house from?”
  • Talk about characters’ feelings and explore different perspectives.
  • Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar and practise counting the foods together.

🎵 Sing Nursery Rhymes

  • Sing Incy Wincy Spider together and practise the actions.
  • Talk about the weather and what happens when it rains.

🌱 Explore Spring

  • Look for signs of spring on walks — flowers blooming, buds on trees or insects.
  • Plant seeds together and observe how they grow.
  • Talk about healthy foods and balanced meals.

By working together, we can help build the strong foundations children need to feel confident and ready for their next steps in learning.

We are looking forward to a busy and engaging month filled with creativity, storytelling and skill-building. Here’s to a fantastic March of learning and growth at Fun Start Childcare! 🌸
